A mobile court has sentenced a man to three years in prison for stealing ballot paper books from a polling station in the Sherpur-1 Sadar constituency.
The incident occurred around 10am on Thursday at the Nalbaid South Government Primary School polling centre in Chormochoriya Union, said Presiding Officer Md Shahidul Islam.
He said three ballot paper books were stolen from the centre in the morning, prompting a temporary suspension of voting.
Law enforcing agencies arrived shortly afterward and brought the situation under control. Voting later resumed.
Shahidul said the three stolen ballot paper books were recovered about 40 minutes after the incident.
In one of the books, officials found 53 ballot papers already sealed with the BNP's "paddy sheaf" symbol. Those sealed ballots have been cancelled.
Suman was arrested on suspicion of involvement in the theft.
A mobile court led by a judicial magistrate later sentenced him to three years in prison and fined him Tk 5,000. If the fine is not paid, he will serve an additional three months in jail.
The presiding officer said regular case proceedings are also underway against others involved in the incident.
In a separate development in the same constituency, a clash broke out around 10:30am outside the Herua Government Primary School polling station in the Herua Balughat area.
The confrontation occurred between supporters of the Jamaat-backed scales symbol and an independent candidate using the motorcycle symbol, said Presiding Officer Moniruzzaman Zahid.
Two people were injured in the incident.
Police later arrived at the scene and brought the situation under control.
The presiding officer said voter turnout appeared to dip slightly following the clash outside the centre.
