Islami Andolan chief Syed Muhammad Rezaul Karim has promised to implement Islam’s fundamental principles in governance if elected.
Popularly known as Charmonai Pir, he made the pledge during a speech broadcast on Bangladesh Television and Bangladesh Betar on Sunday evening.
“The fundamental principles of Islam concern the courts, justice, sensitivity to citizens’ interests, accountability, social security, the rule of law, and ensuring that people of all religions can practise their faith with equal respect and dignity,” he said.
“If Islami Andolan comes to power, it will fully implement these fundamental principles,” he added.
In his speech, the faith-based leader outlined his party’s vision for the state and reform. He also quoted the core components of his party’s manifesto and the party’s special events.
“In the upcoming election, Islami Andolan has presented Islam -- the faith and principles practised by the people of this land for a thousand years -- as the guiding principle for state governance,” he said.
“Shariah is not just the name of a law; it is a combination of human belief, worldview, culture, habits, and legal principles.
“The majority of people in this region embrace Islam as their faith, way of life, culture, and practice,” he said.
He said Bangladesh can achieve prosperity and its goals with the implementation of Islam’s principles.
In the national election scheduled to be held on Feb 12, Islami Andolan is contesting independently, fielding candidates in 259 constituencies.
Initially, the party had been part of the 11-party alliance led by Jamaat-e-Islami, but it withdrew after failing to reach an agreement over the seat sharing.
