Jatiya Party shut out in Rangpur stronghold as Quader, Patwary finish 3rd

While the party founded by Ershad suffer a debacle, Jamaat-e-Islami emerges as the dominant force across Rangpur

The Jatiya Party has failed to secure a single seat in Rangpur, long regarded as the party's stronghold, in the Feb 12 election.

In a major setback, Jatiya Party Chairman GM Quader and Secretary General Shamim Haider Patwary both finished third in their respective constituencies.

Quader came third in Rangpur-3, which covers the city corporation and Sadar areas. Patwary also placed third in Gaibandha-1.

While the party founded by former military strongman HM Ershad suffered a dramatic decline, Jamaat-e-Islami emerged as the dominant force across Rangpur. Its ally, the National Citizen Party (NCP), also captured one seat in the region. BNP candidates finished second in all six Rangpur constituencies, several by relatively narrow margins.

In Rangpur-1, Jamaat’s Raihan Siraji won with 174,245 votes, defeating BNP’s Mokaram Hossain Sujon, who secured 69,131.

In Rangpur-2, Jamaat’s ATM Azharul Islam claimed victory with 135,556 votes. BNP’s Mohammad Ali Sarkar received 80,538.

In Rangpur-3, Jamaat’s Mahbubar Rahman Belal won with 175,827 votes. BNP’s Shamsuzzaman Samu came second with 84,578, while Quader finished third with 43,385 votes. Quader had won the seat in 2024 and served as leader of the opposition in parliament.

In Rangpur-4, NCP’s Akhter Hossen secured 149,966 votes, narrowly ahead of BNP’s Emdadul Haque Bhorosa, who received 140,564.

In Rangpur-5, Jamaat’s Golam Rabbani won with 176,411 votes. BNP’s Golam Rabbani placed second with 115,116.

In Rangpur-6, Jamaat’s Nurul Amin secured victory with 120,128 votes, edging BNP’s Saiful Islam, who polled 117,703.

In neighbouring Gaibandha-1, Jamaat’s Md Majedur Rahman was elected with 140,726 votes. BNP’s Khandakar Ziaul Islam Mohammad Ali secured 37,997 votes, while Patwary received 33,976.
