Ramshackle four-wheelers packed with passengers

These four-wheel haulers, locally known as Lagunas, can be seen in nearly every area of Dhaka. They pick up passengers at every intersection, filling their seats with three or four more occasionally hanging off the back. Although these battered vehicles have been running for years, their condition is rarely improved. It seems like some parts could fall off at any moment.

Little about their appearance inspires confidence as to their fitness, but Lagunas still ply Dhaka's streets every day. The vehicles have no headlights despite places for them and the bumpers are hanging loose. Photo: Mahmud Zaman Ovi

Although there is only one seat at the front of these four-wheelers, two people squeeze in. The condition of this ramshackle vehicle is so poor that the passenger sitting in front has to hold onto the broken door. Photo: Mahmud Zaman Ovi

While all four-wheel vehicles on the road are required to have number plates, it is rare to find them on Lagunas. Photo: Mahmud Zaman Ovi
