Father claims repeated calls for help went unanswered as newborn twins died at Ad-din

Relatives say they were left relying on non-medical staff during a critical period

A father whose newborn twins died in Dhaka’s Ad-din Medical College Hospital has alleged that neither doctors nor nurses responded despite repeated calls for help on the night of the incident.

He claimed the babies died because medical staff were not present “at the right time”.

Six newborns died in the post-operative ward of Ad-din Medical College Hospital in the early hours of Wednesday, a day before Eid-ul-Azha.

A case has since been filed with Ramna Police over the incident.

Among the six infants who died were the twin sons of Mohammad Hasan Sardar.

The Barishal resident told bdnews24.com, “Both of my twin boys were healthy after my wife’s caesarean section. On Tuesday night, I called out to them and they blinked their eyes.”

“On Wednesday morning, we were supposed to receive discharge papers, but instead we were given death certificates.”

Hasan said men were not allowed into the room where newborns were kept, which is why his sister stayed as an attendant with his wife and children.

“Later I heard that around 2am on Tuesday night, the room became very hot and there was an unusual smell. My sister and several others asked for doctors and nurses to be called, but none of them were there.”

“They informed the cleaning staff several times and asked them to call a nurse, but no one came.”

He alleged that the infants died because doctors and nurses were not available when they were needed.
