Five more deaths takes dengue toll past 100, 1,324 hospitalised

Bangladesh has recorded five more deaths from dengue, as well as 1,324 more hospitalisations with the disease – the highest single-day hospitalisation figure recorded this year.

So far, Bangladesh has registered 102 deaths from the mosquito-borne disease over the 24 hours from 8am on Tuesday, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) bulletin on Wednesday.  

Of the latest hospital admissions, 141 were reported in Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) and 138 in Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC). Another 298 patients were admitted to hospitals elsewhere in Dhaka Division.

Outside Dhaka, 121 patients were admitted in the Barishal Division, 139 in Chattogram, 246 in Khulna, 87 in Mymensingh, 114 in Rajshahi, 34 in Rangpur, and five in Sylhet.

Of these, 141 were admitted to hospitals in the Dhaka North City Corporation area. 138 were admitted to hospitals in the South City Corporation area. Another 298 patients have been admitted outside the two city corporations.

Among the divisions, 121 were admitted to the hospital in Barisal, 139 in Chittagong, 246 in Khulna and 87 in Mymensingh, 114 in Rajshahi, 34 in Rangpur and 5 in Sylhet.

A total of 1,180 patients were discharged from hospitals in the past 24 hours.

According to the health directorate, 37,170 people have been hospitalised with dengue across Bangladesh since Jan 1. Of them, 34,385 have recovered and been discharged.

The health directorate has maintained records of dengue hospitalisations and deaths since 2000.

In 2023, 321,179 people were hospitalised with dengue, the highest annual figure on record. That year also saw the country's highest number of dengue deaths, at 1,705.

Last year, more than 400 people died of dengue, while around 120,000 cases were recorded.
