Ad-din Medical College Hospital has been fined Tk 300,000 after a mobile court uncovered hygiene lapses and irregularities in food management during a surprise inspection.
A team led by Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Executive Magistrate Aminul Islam conducted the drive at the hospital on Sunday and issued the order.
The inspection continued from 3:30pm to 6pm, carried out by a three-member city corporation team.
Aminul said they also found unlabeled food items.
He said Tk 200,000 was fined under the Safe Food Act and Tk 100,000 under the Consumer Rights Protection Act.
The hospital authorities paid the fine immediately.
Aminul said no functioning meter was found in refrigerators outside the blood bank, except in chambers.
“Some parts of the hospital were found to be unclean. In one area, biscuits or food items were found with poor labelling, and the surroundings were unhygienic,” he said.
He added that the hospital authorities had been instructed to rectify the issues and that the matter had been reported to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
Responding to questions on why the facility had not been inspected earlier, the magistrate said limited manpower had prevented regular inspections, adding that monitoring would be strengthened in future.
The inspection came after six newborns in the hospital’s post-operative ward died suddenly in the early hours of Wednesday, the day before Eid-ul-Azha.
