Bangladesh reports 4 more deaths with measles symptoms as toll rises to 702

Health authorities also confirm 130 new measles cases in a day

Bangladesh has recorded four more deaths with measles symptoms over the past 24 hours, while health authorities confirmed 130 new measles infections.

According to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), the latest deaths have raised the nationwide toll of people who have died with measles symptoms to 702.

The figures were published in the DGHS daily bulletin on Tuesday, covering the 24-hour period from 8am on Monday.

The health authorities have been releasing daily measles updates since Mar 15.

The health directorate said the total number of confirmed deaths from measles now stands at 95.

Dhaka Division has recorded the highest number of deaths with measles symptoms at 303, followed by Sylhet with 103.

Rajshahi has reported 90 such deaths, Chattogram 56, Barishal 43, Mymensingh 67, Khulna 31 and Rangpur nine.

The health bulletin also said 878 people with measles symptoms sought treatment at hospitals across the country over the past 24 hours.

During the same period, 1,218 patients were admitted to hospital.

Of them, 275 were admitted in Dhaka Division, 43 in Rajshahi, 51 in Sylhet, 624 in Chattogram, 116 in Barishal, 54 in Mymensingh, 47 in Khulna and eight in Rangpur.

With the latest admissions, the cumulative number of hospitalised measles patients has reached 102,244 nationwide.

Of them, 98,411 have since been discharged.

The health directorate said the total number of suspected measles cases across Bangladesh has now risen to 119,448, while the number of laboratory-confirmed cases stands at 14,708.

Health officials continue to monitor the outbreak as new infections and hospital admissions are reported across the country.
