The number of deaths among patients with measles-like symptoms continues to tick up at Mymensingh Medical College Hospital (MMCH).
Two more patients with the symptoms have died at the hospital over the past 24 hours. Another 26 children with symptoms have been admitted during this period.
Mohammad Mainuddin Khan, assistant director at MMCH, said on Thursday morning that both children had died around 8am while undergoing treatment.
One was a three-month-old from Netrokona Sadar Upazila who was admitted to the hospital with measles-like symptoms on Mar 17.
The other was an eight-month-old from Trishal Upazila, who was admitted with measles-like symptoms on Mar 18.
Mainuddin said that 324 children had been admitted to the hospital since Mar 17 with measles-like symptoms. Of them, nine have died while 239 others have been discharged after recovery. Seventy-six children remain at the hospital.
MMCH Assistant Professor Dr Golam Mowla said measles is a highly-contagious virus and can spread quickly through the air from sneezes and coughs, as well as through direct contact.
In addition to measles, many children are coming to the hospital with pneumonia and diarrhoea. A dedicated unit has been set up on the eighth floor of the new MMCH building to handle the situation.
The doctor urged everyone to stay alert to prevent the spread of measles.
