Two more infants die in Sylhet with measles symptoms as divisional cases rise to 149

Hospitals in the division are treating 275 patients

Sylhet has reported the deaths of two more children after exhibiting symptoms of measles, raising the total number of deaths from the viral disease to 37 in the division this year.

The fatalities occurred in the 24 hours leading up to 8am on Monday, confirmed Mohammad Nure Alam Shamim, assistant director of the Sylhet Divisional health directorate.

The dead were identified as 10-month-old Sajid Ahmed, who passed away at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital, and 9-month-old Nusaiba Shahid, who died at Shahid Shamsuddin Ahmed Hospital.

Both children hailed from the Bishwanath Upazila of Sylhet.

According to the daily bulletin from the Sylhet health director's office, 73 new patients were admitted to hospitals with measles symptoms within the latest 24-hour window.

Currently, 275 patients are undergoing treatment for the disease across different public and private hospitals in the division.

Among the hospitalised patients, 74 are receiving care at Shahid Shamsuddin Ahmed Hospital and 75 at Osmani Medical College Hospital.

The report noted that while no new lab-confirmed measles cases were identified through sample tests in the last 24 hours, the division has recorded 149 lab-confirmed measles cases since Jan 1.

Of the 37 total fatalities reported this year, four were clinically confirmed as measles, while the remaining 33 deaths involved patients exhibiting classic symptoms of the viral disease.
