The Bangladesh Diabetic Association is marking the 37th death anniversary of founder and former national professor Dr Muhammad Ibrahim on Sunday, Sept 6.
The association is observing the day as “Diabetes Service Day”.
To commemorate the occasion, free diabetes diagnosis and affordable treatment are being provided at all health centres of the association, including BIRDEM, Ibrahim Cardiac Hospital, BIHS General Hospital and National Healthcare Network, the organisation said in a press release. The seven-day programme will run from Sept 1 to 7.
Dr Ibrahim died of a heart attack at his residence on Sept 6, 1989.
To mark the day, wreaths will be placed at his grave at Banani Graveyard at 8:30am on Sunday. A question-and-answer session between specialist doctors and patients will be held at the BIRDEM auditorium at 10am.
A memorial meeting has been organised at the same location at 11:30am. The meeting will be chaired by the association's president, Prof AK Azad Khan, and will be addressed by Secretary General Mohammad Saif Uddin and BIRDEM's Acting Director General brigadier general (retd) Dr Md Nasir Uddin Ahmed and others. After that, at 12:30pm, Prof Amin Islam, a consultant haematologist at Queen Mary University of London, will deliver the 'Ibrahim Memorial Oration'.
In addition, free consultation will be provided to heart patients at the Ibrahim Cardiac Hospital from 9am to 4pm. A voluntary blood donation programme will also be held on the third floor of BIRDEM Hospital.
A prayer service will be held at the BIRDEM Mosque after Asr prayers and a special issue of the association's own publication “Kanti” will be released.
