Bangladesh has reported five dengue-related deaths in the past 24 hours, bringing this year’s total toll to 238, while 841 patients were admitted to hospitals around the country.
According to Tuesday’s bulletin from the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), the tally of hospitalisations from the Aedes mosquito-borne disease this year rose to 56,257 with the latest admissions.
The health directorate also reported, of the five dead, two were men and three women. Four of them were aged between 59-65, and the other an 18-year old.
They were receiving treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, Mugda Medical College Hospital, Mitford Hospital, and Mymensingh Medical College Hospital.
September recorded the highest monthly admissions this year, with 15,866 patients, including 76 deaths. Between Oct 1-14, as many as 8,914 patients were admitted, and 40 deaths were reported.
Earlier in July, 10,684 patients were admitted, while January saw 1,161, February 374, March 336, April 701, May 1,773, June 5,951, and August 10,496 hospitalisations.
Deaths in July reached 41, while January recorded 10, February three, April seven, May three, June 19, and August 39. No deaths were recorded in March.
Among the newly admitted patients in the past 24 hours, 301 were from Dhaka’s two city corporations, while 214 were from other districts of Dhaka Division, 19 from Mymensingh, 106 from Chattogram, 26 from Khulna, 47 from Rangpur, 125 from Barishal, and three from Sylhet.
At the moment, 2,665 dengue patients are undergoing treatment in hospitals across the country, including 971 in Dhaka hospitals and 1,694 outside the capital.
The health directorate has been recording dengue-related admissions and deaths since 2000. The highest number of hospitalisations was 321,179 in 2023, with 1,705 deaths, marking the deadliest year to date.
