A 9-month-old child with measles symptoms has died in Sherpur.
The infant died while undergoing treatment at the 250-bed Sherpur District Sadar Hospital on Saturday afternoon, according to the hospital's superintendent, Md Selim Mia.
The child, named Safuad, hailed from Madarpur village in Jhenaigati Upazila.
Meanwhile, the number of patients with suspected measles symptoms in the district has continued to climb. Five more patients have been admitted to the Sadar Hospital with measles symptoms in the 24 hours since Saturday morning. The number of people with measles symptoms admitted to the Sadar Hospital has now reached 44.
On Sunday morning, Civil Surgeon Dr Mohammad Shahin said that from Mar 30 to Sunday, 154 patients with measles symptoms have come to the district for treatment. Samples from 110 of them have been collected, and of these, 101 have been sent to Dhaka for testing. So far, four of the samples have tested positive.
“Fifty-two people have recovered and returned home after treatment,” Shahin said. “Currently, 44 are hospitalised. The rest are receiving treatment at home.”
The district civil surgeon also said that if someone shows symptoms of measles, they should be isolated. He also advised the use of masks, hand sanitiser, and regular hand washing.
