Police detectives have arrested actor and filmmaker Meher Afroz Shaon in Dhaka’s Dhanmondi.
Additional Commissioner Rezaul Karim Mallik of DMP’s Detective Branch said she was arrested around 8pm on Thursday.
However, the official did not say on what charges she has been shown arrested.
A group of “protesters” set fire to Shaon’s village home in Jamalpur’s Narundi around 6pm on Thursday. The detective police reported her detention in Dhaka shortly after the incident.
Last year, she collected the Awami League's nomination form to run for the reserved women's seat in the 12th parliament from the Mymensingh Division.
The actor’s mother Tahura Ali was also a reserved seat MP in the parliament.
Shaon, a Bangladeshi actress, dancer, singer, director, and architect, is the wife of the late writer Humayun Ahmed.
As a dancer, Shaon won the reality television competition “Notun Kuri”, a programme for child artistes. She started her acting career with Humayun Ahmed's drama series Nokkhotrer Raat in 1996.
She has acted in numerous films and TV serials popular among the audience.
The "Bulldozer March" programme, which was launched at Dhganmondi Road No. 32 on Wednesday in response to an online speech by deposed premier Sheikh Hasina from exile in India, continued on Thursday after spreading to parts of Bangladesh.
Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's house at Dhanmondi 32 was demolished with excavators and cranes. Hasina’s residence Sudha Sadan at Dhanmondi 5 was also burnt down.
Houses of Hasina's relatives and Awami League leaders outside Dhaka were vandalised in Khulna, Jashore, Kushtia, Barishal, and Sylhet.
