Rumours have swirled once again in the Marvel universe as Tobey Maguire has been tipped to reprise his iconic role in a potential “Spider-Man 4”.
The Times of India reported that the veteran superhero actor might don the iconic suit again for a film directed by Sam Raimi, the filmmaker behind the original trilogy that defined a generation of superhero cinema.
It said The Batman co-writer Mattson Tomlin has expressed keen interest in penning the story for the anticipated project.
The writer’s recent post on X has reignited online discussions and left fans buzzing with excitement.
The report said Tomlin responded to a fan on X who asked about the progress of his efforts to bring back Maguire in the much-anticipated fourth instalment. “Slow and steady wins the race,” he replied.
“There won’t be anything to say about that for a long time (if ever!) because it involves a lot of people and politics and things going right that have nothing to do with me.”
He, however, added optimistically, “But I haven’t gotten a ‘no’ yet!”
According to The Times of India, Tomlin’s creative fascination lies in exploring a mature Spider-Man who balances the challenges of fatherhood with heroism.
“Honestly, my main interest would be to write a Spider-Man 4 where Tobey’s Spider-Man is juggling being a husband and a father. Spider-Man as a father is where I gravitate towards, given the last eight films,” the report quoted him as saying.
The report read that director Raimi and actress Kirsten Dunst, who played Mary Jane Watson in the original trilogy, have both previously shown interest in revisiting the franchise.
In earlier remarks, Raimi stated that he would be “open” to helming another Spider-Man project, while Dunst echoed her willingness to explore a storyline centred around Peter and Mary Jane as parents.
If realised, the project would mark the long-awaited continuation of a cinematic saga that first swung into audiences’ hearts over two decades ago.
