Thought "Avengers: Endgame" had wrapped up its story seven years ago? Marvel may have some homework for fans before the next Avengers film arrives.
Director Joe Russo has described the upcoming "Avengers: Endgame Encore" rerelease as “required viewing” for audiences planning to see "Avengers: Doomsday", saying the new edition will help connect the stories of the two films.
Entertainment Weekly reported on Friday that the special edition will return to cinemas on Sept 25 with a new introduction, additional footage and a special end tag tied to Doomsday.
Speaking to Fandango alongside his brother and co-director Anthony Russo, Joe said the rerelease would “connect the story of the two movies”.
He said there was a natural progression from Endgame into Doomsday, incorporating other Marvel stories that have unfolded since the 2019 blockbuster.
Joe said revisiting Endgame in cinemas would also allow fans to relive the communal experience of the original release before adding that he considered it “required viewing” for following the story in Doomsday.
Anthony offered a further tease about what the new material might reveal.
“If you saw Endgame when it was originally released, you couldn’t see this coming,” he told Fandango.
What is Different About Endgame Encore?
The original Endgame brought Marvel’s Infinity Saga to a dramatic conclusion in 2019.
The Encore edition, however, is more than a straightforward theatrical rerelease. According to Entertainment Weekly, it includes additional scenes intended to provide a direct link to Doomsday, along with a special end tag in selected premium-format screenings.
Marvel has so far kept the substance of the new material largely under wraps, leaving fans to speculate about how events from Endgame will feed into the next Avengers film.
The connection has attracted particular interest because Robert Downey Jr, whose Tony Stark died in Endgame, is returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Doomsday — this time as Victor von Doom, or Doctor Doom.
Chris Evans is also returning as Steve Rogers, with Doomsday bringing together characters from the Avengers, Fantastic Four and X-Men franchises.
The new Avengers film is scheduled for release on Dec 18, less than three months after Endgame Encore returns to cinemas.
Exactly how the two films will connect remains a mystery.
But if the Russo brothers are to be believed, fans who thought they had finished with Endgame in 2019 may need to revisit it before Doomsday begins.
