The National Curriculum and Textbook Board, or NCTB, has released the revised, abbreviated syllabus for the 2026 Secondary School Certificate examinations. The question format and mark distribution for the public exams have also been released.

The division breakdown for Classes 9-10 were removed in the “new curriculum” formulated under the then Awami League government, but the Ministry of Education has already announced that it will return to the old format from next year. According to that announcement, the NCTB has brought back the divisions in the latest announcement.

The syllabus, format and mark distribution were released on the board's website on Saturday.

NCTB Secretary Shah Md Firoz Al Ferdaus told bdnews24.com: “We have already sent the abbreviated syllabus, question format and mark distribution for SSC and equivalent exams to the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education. It has been published.”

The syllabus covers 32 subjects in the fields of science, business studies, and humanities.

The mark distribution shows that for subjects without a practical component, 70 marks will be allocated for the essay section and 30 marks in the multiple-choice section.

For those with practical components, there will be 75 marks for the theory section and 25 marks for the practical section.

On Sept 1, 23 days after taking office, the Ministry of Education of the interim government officially turned its back on the “New Curriculum or National Curriculum Outline-2021” formulated during the Awami League government.

The ministry had said in the circular issued with that announcement that the curriculum was not feasible. Therefore, a revised curriculum will be finalised in 2025 and fully implemented from 2026. Before that, textbooks similar to the old curriculum will be distributed to students in 2025.

In order for students who pass the 10th grade in 2025 to take the SSC and equivalent examinations (to be held in 2026), the revised and updated textbooks prepared in the light of the previous National Curriculum-2012 (i.e. the books used in the 2023 academic year) will be provided to students, while bringing back the science, humanities, and business studies branches, it said.

A short syllabus will be prepared for these textbooks based on the branches according to the National Curriculum-2012 so that students can complete the curriculum within one academic year, it said at the time. The teaching and evaluation system will also be conducted according to the National Curriculum-2012.

The work of revising and printing the 2012 syllabus books for distribution in 2025 is underway. The NCTB has already announced that next year's Class 10 students who will sit for the 2026 SSC examinations will also receive revised books in the same curriculum.
