Bangladesh Bank Governor Ahsan H Mansur has announced that new banknotes, free of any individual's portrait, will be released ahead of the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha.

The government has decided to issue redesigned Tk 1,000, Tk 50, and Tk 20 notes, which will showcase images of mosques, temples, historic landmarks, and natural landscapes instead, he said at an event on Saturday.

“Three new notes will be introduced to the market very soon. You’ll see them before Eid. No individual’s portrait will appear on them.”

“They will feature our natural scenery and iconic heritage structures,” he added.

Earlier this year, Bangladesh Bank Executive Director and Spokesperson Arif Hossain Khan hinted that redesigned banknotes without the portrait of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman could enter circulation by the end of April or early May.

Providing more detail on the types of structures to be depicted, Governor Mansur said: “The designs will highlight architecturally or historically significant sites in Bangladesh, be they mosques, temples, or other landmarks. We are not drawing any distinctions.”
