Actress Azmeri Haque Badhon has alleged that she was attacked while taking part in the Venice International Film Festival in Italy. She has already filed a complaint with the local police station seeking redress.

Badhon went live on her verified Facebook page, saying that a group of expatriates threw “water and rotten eggs” at her while she was in Venice on Monday night local time.

She alleged, "Some leaders and activists of the Venice Awami League and Chhatra League perpetrated this incident because of my support for the movement of July-August 2024."

Several videos circulating on social media showed a group of people claiming to be Chhatra League activists calling Badhon a “July militant” and trying to attack her.

According to witnesses, the situation became heated with political slogans and even a brawl breaking out over Badhon's presence at the film festival. Objects were also thrown at her.

In addition to actively participating in the protests during the 2024 July Uprising, the actress was also vocal about the political situation at the time on international media. It is believed the attack was motivated by her role.

No casualties were reported in the incident, but the actress is said to have filed a complaint with the local police station seeking redress.

Venice Awami League and Chhatra League leaders have yet to make any official comment on the matter.

Badhon, who gained international recognition for the film “Rehana Maryam Noor”, is currently representing Bangladesh at the Venice Film Festival.

The attack on her has sparked criticism on social media.
