The Bangladesh Embassy in Moscow says that the number of Bangladeshi nationals killed in a fire at the Amur Gas Chemical Complex (AGCC) in the Amur Oblast region of Russia's Far East has risen to four.
The fourth victim, Mahin Uddin from Narsingdi, died on Friday local time, said the embassy's First Secretary (Labour) Mizanur Rahman.
Mizanur told bdnews24.com that he had gone to a Moscow hospital on Wednesday to see Mahin, who was undergoing treatment.
"He died on Friday morning while undergoing treatment. He was still talking the day before yesterday. He spoke to his family on a video call."
A major fire broke out at the AGCC near the town of Svobodny on Aug 25.
The AGCC initially reported seven deaths, including those of six Chinese nationals, in a statement. It later posted the death toll on its Telegram channel, which said 14 foreigners had died.
The Moscow Times reported on Wednesday that the AGCC is being built by a joint venture between Russian petrochemical giant SIBUR and China's state-owned oil and gas company Sinopec. The nearly $10 billion project is to become one of the world's largest polymer production facilities. It was undergoing final testing before it was commissioned early next year.
The AGCC said the fire started in a support section of the pyrolysis unit and spread. However, the fire did not damage the complex's main equipment.
Two days after the incident, on Aug 27, embassy official Mizan reported the death of one Bangladeshi national and that another had gone missing. Later, the embassy confirmed the death of a third person, Abdul Quddus.
Zakir Hossain, who was confirmed dead on Aug 26-27, hailed from Kishoreganj’s Bhairab. The second victim, Md Alal Hossain Raju, hailed from Meherpur’s Gangni. Abdul Quddus hailed from Rajbari’s Pangsha.
Mizanur said that the bodies of the deceased Zakir and Raju have already been placed in coffins after their postmortems. The bodies will reach their families in Dhaka by a cargo plane by September 9.
“It may take another six to seven days for the authorities to complete all the procedures for the bodies of Abdul Quddus and Mahin Uddin, who died in Moscow Hospital. They will be sent to Bangladesh afterwards.”
Mizanur said that 36 Bangladeshis were injured in the fire. One of them is admitted to the hospital in serious condition, while the rest have been discharged following treatment.
