The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) election has unfolded as expected, with no surprises in the race for the board’s top positions, as Aminul Islam Bulbul secured the position of president unopposed.
Having first assumed the role unopposed on May 30 after his nomination by the National Sports Council, Bulbul was elected as a director of the board without contest in Monday's election as the Dhaka Division Sports Council representative.
No one else ran for the presidential post of the BCB as Bulbul became the 20th head of the board.
The only other individual to have held this position multiple times is Nazmul Hassan Papon, who served as president for four terms, first being appointed by the government in 2012 and later being re-elected three times unopposed.
The two vice-president positions were filled uncontested as well, with Faruque Ahmed and Shakhawat Hossain being elected.
Faruque, who had lost his position as president in a dramatic turn of events four months ago, was reinstated after facing multiple accusations from Advisor Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain. Shakhawat, according to rumours, is a close associate of the youth and sports advisor.
The election process, however, has raised multiple allegations of “poll-fixing” and government interference, with 21 candidates withdrawing due to claims of irregularities and corruption.
