Restoring the tarnished image of Bangladesh cricket will be the priority, newly appointed BCB chief Tamim Iqbal has said, outlining an urgent reform agenda upon taking charge.
Appointed by the National Sports Council (NSC) on Tuesday afternoon, Tamim arrived at the BCB office before evening, met officials across departments, and held brief discussions before convening the first meeting of the 11-member ad hoc committee.
Speaking after the meeting, Tamim set the tone: “Whenever someone takes this role, they talk about development. But for my team and me, our first task is to fix the image of Bangladesh cricket.
“The damage done over the past one to one-and-a-half years must be addressed first.”
The ad hoc committee is mandated to hold elections within three months.
Tamim stressed their commitment to ensuring a free and fair process while maintaining the board’s daily operations.
“We have been given the responsibility to hold free and fair elections within three months. We will carry out this duty with honesty and as quickly as possible.
“At the same time, we will handle ongoing responsibilities, including World Cup-related matters, in the right way.”
Tamim repeatedly returned to the need to rebuild pride in Bangladesh cricket.
“I’m sure everyone believes cricket’s image has been damaged. We must fix this together. Criticism will exist, debates will continue, but no one wants cricket to remain where it is now.”
He added, “Cricket has always been a matter of pride. People working at the BCB once spoke with pride about their association. I’m not sure that pride exists now. We must bring it back.
“Players and all stakeholders must be respected -- this is our primary task.”
The former captain emphasised that results, not rhetoric, would define his leadership.
“We will change for the better -- not just in words. We will make mistakes, learn, and try again.”
Tamim also named ad hoc member Tanjil Chowdhury as the board’s spokesperson.
The committee’s second meeting is scheduled for 6pm on Wednesday.
