Former Bangladesh cricket captain Khaled Mashud has secured a seat on the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) for the first time, according to preliminary results.
The results have not yet been officially declared, but early counts have circulated widely.
Inside a five-star hotel, supporters erupted in cheers, shouting his name. He was then showered with multiple flower garlands, almost hidden beneath them, yet his broad smile remained visible.
Curiosity about the controversial and disputed election focused mainly on this category, where Mashud won by a large margin. The former wicketkeeper-batsman received 35 votes.
His only competitor in this category, fellow former cricketer Debabrata Paul, received just 7 votes.
After the vote, Debabrata, a councillor at Jahangirnagar University, alleged government interference in the election. According to him, the issue runs deeper than simple vote-fixing.
