BCB refuses to accept Robi’s reasons to scrap sponsorship deal

Robi’s decision to cancel the sponsorship deal has ‘surprised’ Bangladesh Cricket Board, which is not ‘fully ready’ to accept the reasons cited by the telecom operator for the move.

The mobile telecom operator said on Sunday it was terminating the contract 10 months before the end of its term saying it ‘lost relevance’.

“The main reason they (Robi) mentioned is that they had objections to contradiction between the deal with them and the players’ personal sponsorship contracts,” BCB Chief Executive Officer Nizam Uddin Chowdhury told bdnews24.com on Monday.

Robi took the decision to revoke the contract because the issue had not been fully resolved for over a year since the deal was signed, he said.

“But we are not fully ready to accept the reason,” the BCB CEO said.

Nizam added that the board had taken measures to resolve the issue after discussions with Robi and the telecom operator had been aware of the steps.

“Shakib Al Hassan cancelled his (personal) contract. Tamim Iqbal also ended his contract with Grameenphone. The process of ending Mashrafe Bin Mortuza’s contract with Grameenphone was also under way,” he said.

“That’s why the decision has surprised us,” he added.

The BCB had hoped Robi would give them time to iron out the issues as the process to withdraw from “massive campaign” based on the players’ personal contracts was supposed to be lengthy, Nizam Uddin said.

The complexities surfaced after the contract with Robi was extended last year when the company added new conditions like termination of personal contracts with others, he said.

The board, however, has accepted Robi’s decision and is looking for a new sponsor, Nizam Uddin said.

They are hopeful about finding the new sponsor at least for the upcoming Asia Cup tournament before it starts in September.

The board’s CEO also said they would be more careful in signing sponsorship deals in future and prevent the players from signing personal contracts that may clash with the BCB deals.
