Prof Saiful Islam made new VC of BUET while DU gets two pro-VCs

The government has appointed Prof Saiful Islam as the new Vice-Chancellor (VC) of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET).

The EEE department teacher will serve as the VC for the next four years, the Education Ministry’s Joint Secretary Laila Arjumand Banu told bdnews24.com on Wednesday night.

 

Saiful Islam told bdnews24.com: “I haven’t received the circular yet. I will join immediately if I get it on Thursday.”

 

Islam is replacing Khaleda Ekram, the first female VC of the country’s top engineering university, who died on May 24 in a hospital in Bangkok.

 

Prof Ekram had worked at BUET for 44 years. She was made the 12th VC in September 2014.

After her death, Prof Zebun Nasreen Ahmed, dean of architecture and planning faculty, was made the Acting VC of BUET.

On Wednesday, along with Saiful Islam, the government also appointed a new pro-VC to Dhaka University and extended a previous one’s tenure.

They are Dean of the Faculty of Arts Prof Md Akhtaruzzaman and Pro-VC Prof Nasreen Ahmed of Geography. Both of them will serve for four years.

Ahmed was first appointed on Jun 5, 2012, along with Dr Shahid Akhtar Hossain of Soil Sciences. Their terms ended on Jun 9.
