The “permanent ink” being used to mark voters’ fingers during the Chittagong University Central Students’ Union (CUCSU) election seems to be coming off, says Bangladesh Chhatra Dal’s assistant general secretary candidate Ayubur Rahman Toufiq.
On Tuesday, after casting his ballot at the Faculty of Engineering, he said: “The administration could have arranged for better quality ink. As everyone will be wandering around outside, it is hard to tell from just the voter list who has voted and who has not.”
“We could have distinguished them using the permanent ink on their fingers, but as the ink is coming off, it could cause some confusion.”
Toufiq said, “I think the administration or the Election Commission should take action on this very quickly.”
Tawfiq said, “We have received a complaint that ballots were sent without signatures in Room 214. I went to that room and spoke to those in charge, but they refused to comment.”
He said, “The Election Commission will discuss this issue. This matter is not completely clear to us. We are trying, and our polling agent has also made a complaint to me, so we will also inform the Election Commission about that.”
Asked if that was the only complaint at the centre, the Chhatra Dal leader said: “I heard this information once I got here. I will go to the BBA, sociology, and science faculties. I will go to the other locations as well and talk to our agents. If there are any more discrepancies, I will let you know.”
Asked whether he had seen outsiders enter the campus, Toufiq said: “We spoke about outsiders at the press conference yesterday as well. I am saying that whoever does not have a valid pass, no matter how influential that outsider may be, they should not be able to come to my university unless they have a valid pass.
“My university’s elections are student elections. There is no question of outsiders coming here. And if outsiders come, the administration will have to take responsibility for it.”
Regarding the overall atmosphere, he said: “Everyone is coming to vote. So, as the day progresses, we will understand the situation. So far, things are looking good.”
