The distribution of nomination papers has begun for the Chittagong University Central Students’ Union (CUCSU) elections.

The process began at the Election Commission’s office in the CUCSU building on Sunday.

Dr Moin Uddin, chief election commissioner for the CUCSU elections, told bdnews24.com that candidates can collect nomination papers for 26 posts in the CUCSU elections and 15 posts in the hall union polls.

The distribution and submission of nomination papers, which began on Sunday morning, will continue until 3:30pm on Wednesday.

Monir said that Tayebul Alam Faraji, a student competing for the post of Shahjalal Hall sports secretary, was the first to receive his application form.

The CUCSU elections will be held on Oct 12 after a 35-year wait. Although CUCSU polls were discussed at various times, they were never organised. Like other public universities, this election is being held at Chittagong University without a party-led government in power under a changed political landscape.

The schedule for the CUCSU elections was announced on Aug 28.

The last CUCSE polls were held on Feb 8, 1990.

Students from 54 departments and institutes of the university will vote in the elections under 14 residential halls to select their preferred representatives.

According to the announced schedule, after the distribution and submission of nomination papers on Sept 18, the preliminary list of candidates will be published on Sept 21 and the final list on Sept 25. Students who had previously collected nominations will be able to withdraw their nomination papers until Sept 23 and objections to their candidacy will be resolved the next day.

According to the code of conduct for the CUCSU elections, after the final list of candidates is published on Sept 25, campaigning may continue until 24 hours before the election. Campaigning can be carried out between 10am and 10pm.

In addition to the posts of vice president (VP), general secretary (GS), and assistant general secretary (AGS), elections will be held for the posts of sports secretary; associate sports secretary; literature, culture and publication secretary; associate literature, culture and publication secretary; office and associate office secretary; secretary for female students welfare; associate secretary for female student welfare; science and information technology secretary; research and innovation secretary; social service and environment secretary; health secretary; Liberation War and democratic movement secretary; career development and international affairs secretary; communication and housing secretary and associate communication and housing secretary; law and human rights secretary, and library and cafeteria secretary, as well as five executive members.

Meanwhile, in the halls, apart from VP, GS, and AGS, polls will be held for the posts of sports secretary; literature, culture and publication secretary; office secretary; reading, dining and hall library secretary;, social service secretary; environment and human rights secretary; science, research, information and technology secretary; health secretary; communication and housing secretary; and three executive members.
