Uttara University hosts workshop to preserve memory of July Uprising

The event aimed to establish a formal process for selecting participants of the Uprising and take steps to preserve its legacy

Students of Uttara University have held a self-initiated “Selection Method Development” workshop to honour those who took part in last year's July Uprising.

The key objective of the workshop, held on Aug 18 at the university’s conference hall, was to determine a selection process for the uprising participants and to formalise activities aimed at preserving its memory.

Several steps were outlined for preserving the memory, including determining the selection method for student participants, creating a list of revolutionaries, confirming their contributions, and professionally editing a memorial publication based on student experiences and evidence. The event was attended by both current and former students. The facilitators were the university’s Proctor Prof ASM Shahabuddin and Shah Ahmed, the director at the Office of Student Affairs.

One of the participants said, “Those who risked their lives by taking part in the July Uprising are the true heroes of Uttara University. Their sacrifice has inspired us.”

The discussants further noted that the primary goal of this initiative would be to safeguard history from distortion and to pass it down from generation to generation.

A memorial publication about the “July 2024 Revolution” will soon be published based on experiences, documents, and information collected from students.

This will be considered an invaluable document not only for the Uttara University community but also for the history of the country, a statement from the institution read.
