Islami Chhatra Shibir-backed candidate Mazharul Islam has warned of "stern" action by his alliance if the results of the Jahangirnagar University Central Students’ Union (JUCSU) election are not declared by the day's end.

Speaking at a press briefing outside the Senate Bhaban around 5pm on Friday, the general secretary candidate said the election must not be derailed.

He alleged that BNP-backed teachers and Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal leaders were “conspiring” to suspend the vote counting process by making excuses.

Mazharul also criticised the decision to cancel OMR ballots, calling it “irrational and inhumane”.

According to him, polling day was already marred by disorder and irregularities, further aggravated by what he described as the aggressive conduct of Chhatra Dal, which, he said, disrupted the electoral atmosphere.

Mazharul went on to accuse several university teachers of encouraging instability on campus.

“This campus does not belong to any teachers’ group or political party. Students have regained the JUCSU election after 33 years. They must be allowed to exercise their rights,” he said.
