Anupam Sen has resigned as the vice-chancellor of Premier University in Chattogram amid mounting protests from students.

He tendered his resignation to the university's chancellor and President Mohammed Shahabuddin on Friday night.

Anupam confirmed to bdnews24.com that he had sent the letter, in which he mentioned his decision to step down due to age-related concerns.

"Due to old age, I have decided to resign from my position as vice-chancellor of Premier University from [Friday]," the letter said.

Anupam had been serving as the university's vice-chancellor since 2006, following his retirement from Chattogram University.

The resignation comes after a group of students launched protests demanding the resignation of Sen, along with the university's pro-vice-chancellor and treasurer, starting from Wednesday.

On that day, the demonstrator locked the gates of three university campuses, including the main GEC campus.

Under the banner of "General Students’ Anti-discrimination Movement, Premier University", the protesters held a sit-in outside the GEC campus on Thursday, calling for action.

They announced plans for even more intense protests on Saturday.

During a meeting with department heads at an academic council session on Friday, Anupam revealed his decision to step down.

The protesters accused him of being a member of the ousted Awami League’s advisory council and of opposing the July- August uprising, labelling him an ally of dictatorship.

Anupam, an internationally acclaimed sociologist, was awarded the Ekushey Padak in 2014 for his contributions to education.

He has dedicated over five decades to teaching.
