The mother of the Dhaka University student allegedly beaten and turned over to the police by members of the NCP’s student affiliate Jatiya Chhatra Shakti over suspicions that he was involved with the Chhatra League, has filed a complaint against several students with Shahbagh Police Station.

Parveen Akter, the mother of the victim Rahid Khan Pavel, filed the complaint with Moniruzzaman, chief of Shahbagh Police Station.

The complaint said that injured Pavel is a student of the 2020-21 session of the Department of Philosophy at Dhaka University. Pavel went out on his motorcycle to have Sehri (early morning meal) around 3am on Sunday. When he reached the Shaheed Minar adjacent to the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) campus, some people blocked his way.

According to the complaint, Saifullah, Hasib-al-Islam, Saeed Afridi, Riyad Mal, Sardar Nadeem Shuvo, Shakib, Forkan Uddin Mohi, Bayezid Hasan, Himel and Sanjeev Hossain, along with 10-15 other unidentified persons, attacked Pavel with local weapons, iron rods, steel pipes and sticks.

The complaint states that when Saifullah tried to hit Pavel on the head with an iron rod, he attempted to block it with his hand. This broke a finger on his right hand. Later, Hasib-al-Islam hit him on the head from behind, striking his left ear. He was seriously injured. In addition, other attackers hit him on various parts of his body with iron rods and steel pipes.

When Pavel tried to run away, he was chased again and thrown to the ground in front of SM Hall and beaten. At one point, the attackers took a mobile phone, Tk 5,000 in cash from his wallet, motorcycle keys and his ATM card from him.

Later, when a rickshaw driver brought the injured Pavel Shahbagh Police Station, he was attacked again, the complaint states.

Police then rescued him and sent him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for treatment with support from the Dhaka University proctorial team.
