Amartya Ray John has been disqualified from contesting for the vice-president post in the Jahangirnagar University Central Students’ Union (JUCSU) election.
Amartya had submitted his nomination from the “Shompritir Oikya” panel, a coalition of multiple student political, cultural and social platforms. He had also begun campaigning on campus.
The decision was announced in a notice published on the JUCSU website on Saturday afternoon.
According to the notice, Amartya -- a student of the archaeology department from the 2017–18 academic session and a resident of AFM Kamaluddin Hall -- was declared ineligible under Articles 4 and 8 of the JUCSU constitution. His name has been withdrawn from both the voter list and the list of valid candidates.
The university authorities made the decision after reviewing his eligibility status, the notice said. His student registration number is 46984.
