Tension has flared between Jatiotabadi Chhatra Dal and Islami Chhatra Shibir in Shahbagh and on the Dhaka University campus after two leaders of the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) were beaten over a “distorted screenshot” posted on Facebook involving Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and his daughter Zaima Rahman.

The incident occurred at Shahbagh Police Station on Thursday evening.

Several members of the Dhaka University Journalists’ Association (DUJA), including its president, were also injured during the incident.

The injured alleged Chhatra Dal leaders attacked them.

However, Chhatra Dal members claimed that a Shibir activist was behind the offensive post, while Shibir members said the screenshot was fake.

DUCSU Literary and Cultural Affairs Secretary Musaddiq Ali Ibne Mohammad and Social Service Secretary AB Zubair were attacked inside the police station while reporting the incident.

Video footage shows the two being assaulted, although some Chhatra Dal members were seen trying to intervene.

Chhatra Dal General Secretary Nasiruddin Nasir neither confirmed nor denied the incident.

“I have just returned from Chattogram. I have heard about it, and we are looking into it,” he told bdnews24.com.

The incident triggered tension around Shahbagh Police Station and across the Dhaka University campus.

Police closed the main gate of the station as Chhatra Dal activists gathered outside, chanting slogans accusing Shibir.
