The results are finally being declared two days after voting ended

The results of the Jahangirnagar University Central Students’ Union (JUCSU) and hall union elections are finally being declared, two days after voting ended.

Chief Election Commissioner Prof Md Maniruzzaman began the announcement from the university’s Senate Hall at 4:30pm on Saturday.

At the start of the programme, a minute’s silence was observed in memory of a teacher who died after joining the initial stages of the vote-counting process.

Nearly 12,000 students were eligible to vote on the Savar campus. According to the Election Commission, around 68 percent cast their ballots during Thursday’s daylong polling.

In the central student body, 177 candidates contested 25 posts, while another 445 candidates stood for positions in the different hall unions.

Vote counting began under tight security at 10pm on Thursday. The announcement comes after two days of delays and disputes, which saw long hours of manual ballot counting, allegations of irregularities, and the death of the teacher who was on counting duty.

This is the first JUCSU election in 33 years, making it one of the most closely watched student polls in Bangladesh since the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) election in 2019.
