East West University (EWU) has celebrated Pahela Baishakh, the first day of the Bengali New Year 1433, with a range of festivities.

The day was met with “great enthusiasm and a wide array of colourful programmes” on its campus in Dhaka’s Aftabnagar, the university said in a media statement.

The day-long celebration featured a vibrant rally, cultural performances, and a traditional Baishakhi Mela, or fair.

“The festivities began with a colourful rally organised by the East West University Club for Performing Arts (EWUCPA). This was followed by a soulful performance of choral songs and a play at the university courtyard by the renowned cultural organisation 'Chhayanaut.' The excitement escalated as the popular band 'Chirkutt' took the stage, performin several of their hit songs. In the afternoon, students from the EWUCPA showcased their talents through captivating dance and musical performances. The event ended with a powerful performance by the acclaimed band 'Meghdol,' which concluded the day’s celebrations,” the press release said.

Throughout the day, a fair is being held on campus featuring stalls offering a variety of traditional and ethnic food, clothing, jewellery, and cosmetics. A large crowd of visitors could be seen on the campus.

Prof Dr Mohammed Farashuddin, chairperson of the EWU Board of Trustees; Prof Shams Rahman, vice chancellor; Prof Ashik Mosaddik, pro-vice chancellor; air commodore (retired) Ishfaq Ilahi Choudhury, treasurer; deans, chairpersons, faculty members, officials, and thousands of students also took part in the festivities.
