Dhaka University departments will be allowed to conduct pending final examinations for the undergraduate fourth year and postgraduate final phase during the winter vacation.
The decision was announced in a statement issued by the university’s Public Relations Office on Thursday.
According to the notice, “Departmental academic committees may continue the ongoing Honours fourth year/eighth semester and Masters final examinations at various departments/institutes of Dhaka University, subject to the consent of all examinees.”
The decision follows appeals from general students and the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU). However, students wishing to stay in residential halls while sitting for exams must apply to the hall authorities.
The announcement noted several residential halls are currently undergoing renovation, which will remain a priority.
“It will require full cooperation from DUCSU and hall student union representatives to ensure that all students can participate in exams and those wishing to stay in halls can do so,” the notice added.
On Nov 21, several students were injured after jumping from different residential halls during a 5.7-magnitude earthquake.
Three more tremors the next day heightened panic on campus.
In view of the students’ anxiety, the university syndicate declared a 15-day closure on Nov 23, bringing ongoing final examinations to a halt.
Although the university was scheduled to reopen on Dec 7, the academic calendar had already marked Dec 7-22 as winter vacation.
The university has decided to retain the winter break and extend it by two additional days, keeping the university closed until Dec 24.
With Christmas on Dec 25 and the weekend break on Dec 26-27, regular classes will resume on Dec 28. Residential halls will also reopen on that day.
In total, Dhaka University will remain closed for five weeks.
