The deadline for collecting nomination papers for the Chittagong University Central Students’ Union (CUCSU) elections has been extended by one day.

The decision followed a demand from Chittagong University (CU) Chhatra Dal General Secretary Abdullah Al Noman, who placed the request before the Election Commission on Wednesday.

The commission reached its decision after a snap meeting, extending the deadline for collecting nomination papers until 5pm Wednesday and allowing submissions until 5pm Thursday.

Chief Election Commissioner Prof Monir Uddin said the decision had been made in light of the fact many CU students had been injured in recent clashes with villagers and were unable to collect nomination papers,

When asked if the time had been extended in response to Chhatra Dal’s demand, he said: “We did not extend the time based on the demand of any group. We considered the students' interests. We want more participatory elections for students.”

In its petition, Chhatra Dal cited that many students were injured in the Aug 30–31 clashes with villagers, while others were at home before the holidays or unable to collect forms due to examinations.

The group had sought a two-day extension.
