A Dhaka court has rejected the bail petition of Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) independent vice-president (VP) candidate Jalal Ahmad in an attempted murder case.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate GM Farhan Ishtiaq passed the order on Tuesday after Jalal’s lawyer Rafiqul Islam Himel submitted the petition.

Prosecutor Shamsuddoha Suman opposed the bail.

Himel was absent during the hearing, which led the court to dismiss the plea.

On Monday, Jalal’s lawyer had withdrawn another bail petition, citing a lack of preparation.

The case was filed with Shahbagh Police Station on Wednesday by Sirajul Islam, provost of Dhaka University’s Haji Muhammad Mohsin Hall, over the alleged murder attempt on Jalal’s roommate Md Rabiul Haque, a political science student.

According to the case, Jalal attacked Rabiul inside their university accommodation room over Rabiul’s noise complaints.

Rabiul was hit with a wooden chair and later with a tube light, causing injuries to his head, chest, and hand.
