The government will construct a residential hall at Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) and name it after slain student Abrar Fahad, Education Minister ANM Ehsanul Hoque Milon has said.
Addressing a discussion at BUET on Saturday afternoon, he said the university will have another campus in Dhaka's Purbachal, where the new dormitory will be built.
He assured BUET he would take speedy action to resolve their accommodation issues.
In March last year, the Dhaka South City Corporation renamed “Bangabandhu Avenue” in Gulistan as “Abrar Fahad Avenue”.
The BUET student was beaten to death by Bangladesh Chhatra League activists inside a residential hall of the university in the wee hours of Oct 7, 2019.
“If students have housing problems, their studies are also disrupted. There is a shortage of seats in the residential halls of BUET. It is our responsibility to solve these problems,” he said.
Milon said they would write to the prime minister for the project.
The minister suggested increasing the number of enrolments at BUET, describing the university’s per capita expenditure as higher than that of other universities.
