DUCSU celebrates ‘Adi Noboborsho’ for first time

The event has been celebrated at the start of Agrahayan, instead of the traditional Boishakh

The Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) has celebrated “Adi Noboborsho” or “original Bengali New Year” at the beginning of the Bengali month of Agrahayan.

The university authorities traditionally observe the Bengali New Year on the first day of Boishakh, the first month of the Bengali calendar.

DUCSU also held a Nabanna Utsab as part of the celebration.

The day-long programme began at 10am and closed at 10pm on Sunday.

The opening segment featured an art session titled “Nabanna in Colours”, where prominent artists along with former and current students of the Faculty of Fine Arts painted pieces themed on July and Nabanna.

In the afternoon, a cultural programme began, led by DUCSU Vice-President Shadik Kayem.

Addressing the event, Shadik said: “Today is a very joyful day for us. Tomorrow the verdict against ‘killer’ Hasina will be delivered. Before that, we are observing the original new year. Once the verdict comes, people across the country will celebrate again.”
