Meghmallar Bosu, president of a faction of the Dhaka University unit of the Bangladesh Students’ Union, has been admitted to hospital after “taking a large dose of medicine”.

He was admitted to Dhaka’s Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital on Friday afternoon, the organisation’s general secretary Maeen Ahmed said around 7:30pm.

Quoting doctors, Maeen told bdnews24.com: “Meghmallar Bosu is in hospital and is recovering.”

Asked about the cause of his illness, he said: “[Meghmallar] had been unwell since the DUCSU election. We found him after he had taken a large dose of medicine.”

“The reason will be known once he recovers. His condition is currently stable,” he said.

In September last year, Meghmallar vied for the post of general secretary in the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) election from the left-leaning seven-party panel “Protirodh Parshad”. He came third with almost 5,000 votes.

The student leader fell ill while campaigning for the DUCSU polls.

On Sept 1 last year, he was admitted to a hospital, where he underwent an appendicitis operation.
