He died on Wednesday around 7:15pm Bangladesh time in a hospital in the United States where he had been undergoing treatment, the group’s Public Relations Manager Ziaul Haque said.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith expressed their condolence at his passing.
Chowdhury, a former major general, was suffering from diabetes and heart ailments and being treated at the Duke Medical Hospital in North Carolina for a month.
He left behind his wife, two sons – Azar Khan Chowdhury and Ahsan Khan Chowdhury - and two daughters – Sera Haque and Uzma Chowdhury.
Ahsan Khan Chowdhury said his father would be laid to rest at Dhaka’s military graveyard.
Chowdhury was born in Natore on Nov 10, 1937.
He studied at Nabakumar Institution before joining the Pakistan Army in 1965. Later, he earned his bachelor’s degree from the Australian Staff College.
Chowdhury started his business career in 1981 after retiring from the army. He had led the PRAN-RFL Group as its chief executive officer.
Chowdhury also served in various trade bodies and organisations, including the Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Dhaka Stock Exchange, Infrastructure Development Co Ltd and Bangladesh Dairy Association in different capacities.
He was one of the founders of the Real Estate and Housing Association of Bangladesh, Bangladesh Agro Processors Association and the Underprivileged Children’s Education Programs (UCEP).
