Grameenphone CEO Vivek Sood received the award at a ceremony during Mobile World Congress in Spain’s Barcelona on Tuesday.
The Climate Change Programme was initiated by Grameenphone in 2010 in a bid to minimise the negative environmental impact on the community through CO2 emissions and fossil fuel consumption.
Initiatives included opting for lower power consuming base stations (BTS) and using solar power in all sites, a conscious move towards renewable power sources.
The GSMA judges lauded the initiative while presenting the prize to GP for Green Mobile.
“This program has set clear targets for the adoption of renewable power sources, including water conservation, and displays commitment to long term pursuit of the project aims.”
Grameenphone started its operations in Bangladesh in March 1997.
It is now the leading and largest telecommunications service provider in Bangladesh with more than 47 million subscribers as of Dec 2013, according to Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission.
