Money changers can sell dollars for no more than Tk 126.5 and buy them at Tk 125.5 under a new rate set by the Money Changer Association of Bangladesh (MCAB).
MCAB President MS Zaman announced the rates at a press conference at the association’s headquarters in Dhaka’s Purana Paltan on Monday.
He warned that exchange houses trading outside the prescribed rates would face “strict action”, including licence cancellation.
“We have taken this decision considering the current market situation,” Zaman told bdnews24.com.
“The dollar is rising globally. Prices are climbing in India, Pakistan and elsewhere. That will naturally affect our market too; there is no way to hold it down artificially,” he said.
He said the interbank dollar rate had risen to Tk 123.9 before falling to Tk 122, then climbed past Tk 122.5 on Monday.
Zaman said the exchange rate would be adjusted in line with global markets, potentially daily, weekly or monthly.
He rejected allegations of market manipulation by money changers, saying their limited market share left little scope for such activity.
He accused banks of making huge profits by creating dollar-market instability after the COVID-19 pandemic, while shifting the blame to money changers.
“Remitters will go wherever they get the best rate,” he said.
MCAB Secretary General Gautam Dey said unlicensed money changers offering abnormal rates were making it difficult for licensed businesses to operate.
Bangladesh now has 228 licensed money changers, including 165 in Dhaka.
