The Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) has cut the price of furnace oil used for power generation by Tk 8.71 per litre, setting the new rate at Tk 100.39 per litre.
The revised price, announced in an order on Thursday, will take effect from midnight, replacing the current rate of Tk 109.10 per litre.
BERC said the adjustment was based on the Platts price of imported refined furnace oil between Jun 30 and Jul 28, the July FOB price of crude oil, and changes in the US dollar exchange rate.
The commission introduced a mechanism to review furnace oil prices every three months, or whenever necessary, following a public hearing on proposals from the Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC) and four oil marketing companies.
The policy, announced on Feb 22, also revised BPC's storage and supply charges, marketing company margins and transportation costs.
The previous adjustment, effective Jul 1, reduced the price by Tk 4.44 per litre to Tk 109.10. Before that, furnace oil prices had been increased by Tk 24.59 per litre in a single revision.
Furnace oil is one of the fuels used in power generation, and the price cut is expected to lower generation costs at furnace oil-fired power plants.
