The Trading Corporation of Bangladesh will begin selling essential commodities through mobile trucks from Monday ahead of Eid-ul-Azha.

The programme will continue for 10 days until May 21, according to a commerce ministry statement issued on Sunday.

Speaking to bdnews24.com, commerce ministry spokesperson Kamal Hossain said regular subsidised sales for TCB cardholders are already ongoing alongside the special Eid initiative.

Commerce Minister Khandakar Abdul Muktadir is scheduled to inaugurate the programme in Dhaka’s Agargaon, the statement said.

Under the initiative, products will be sold through 720 mobile trucks across the country every day.

Excluding Fridays, each truck will serve up to 400 consumers daily with commodities including sugar and lentils.

The ministry said around 13,939 tonnes of products will be sold through the “truck sale” programme, benefiting nearly 28 million people.

Any consumer will be able to purchase products from the trucks.

According to a TCB order issued on Sunday, 50 trucks will operate daily in Dhaka City, including Dhaka District, while 20 trucks will serve Chattogram metropolitan area and district.

Fifteen trucks each will operate in the other six divisional cities and their respective districts, while the remaining 56 districts will each have 10 trucks.

Under the programme, a consumer will be able to buy up to two litres of edible oil at Tk 130 per litre, one kilogramme of sugar at Tk 80 per kg and up to two kilogrammes of lentils at Tk 70 per kg.

The ministry also said around 34,848 tonnes of products will be sold to nearly 7.2 million TCB cardholder families in May before Eid.

The quantity and prices of subsidised edible oil, sugar and lentils sold monthly to cardholder families will remain unchanged.
