US Ambassador to Bangladesh Tracey Ann Jacobson has visited Sonargaon Seeds Crushing Mills Ltd, a concern of Meghna Group of Industries (MGI).
She was received on Thursday by MGI directors Tanjima Mostafa and Barrister Tasnim Mostafa, and Executive Director and Head of Export Sameera Rahman.
During the visit, Ambassador Jacobson observed the soybean crushing operations, with a particular focus on the handling and processing of imported US soybeans.
A statement by MGI said the visit reflects growing agricultural trade ties between the two countries.
The trip follows a $1 billion purchase commitment made earlier in November by three of Bangladesh’s major soy crushing companies, including MGI, in partnership with the US Soybean Export Council (USSEC).
MGI is the largest importer of soybeans in Bangladesh, bringing in close to one million tonnes a year.
The group entered the seeds crushing industry in 2010 with Meghna Seeds Crushing Mills Ltd, later expanding with Sonargaon Seeds Crushing Mills Ltd.
Both facilities now have a combined crushing capacity of 7,500 tonnes per day, the highest in the country.
