The Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE), which has struggled with a prolonged trading slump, has recorded Tk 16.69 billion in share turnover, its highest in 23 months.

The previous peak came on Aug 11, 2024, when turnover reached Tk 20.1 billion, the highest after the Awami League government fell during the July mass uprising.

On Sunday, trading activity rose alongside market sentiment, with the DSE's benchmark index gaining 45 points to close at 5,849, up from 5,804 a day earlier.

Following the BNP's landslide victory in the parliamentary election, daily turnover exceeded Tk 12 billion on Feb 15, 16 and 17 before remaining around Tk 10 billion until Apr 22.

After the Eid-ul-Azha holidays, turnover neared Tk 10 billion for several sessions before climbing above that mark from Jun 2.

It briefly slipped below Tk 10 billion on Jun 22, 23 and 24.

Block market transactions totalled Tk 355.2 million.

Of 392 traded securities, 199 advanced, 156 declined and 37 remained unchanged. Insurance, textile and engineering stocks led turnover.

Meghna Insurance was the day's top gainer, surging 9.78 percent to Tk 41.50 from Tk 37.80.

Sandhani Life Insurance and EBL First Mutual Fund followed.

Apollo Ispat, Jahan Tex Industries and Intech Ltd were the biggest losers.
