The value-added tax (VAT) statement or returns for the month of March can be filed online until Apr 23.

Under the law, VAT returns for each month are due by the 15th of the following month. However, the deadline for last month's returns has been extended due to the Pahela Baishakh holiday and to “resolve the problems arising” from the e-VAT system upgrade, the National Board of Revenue (NBR) said in an order on Wednesday.

It is the third straight month that the tax authority has pushed back the deadline.

The deadline for submitting February’s VAT returns was extended to Mar 29 because of the long Eid holiday.

January’s deadline was also extended by a week to Feb 22 due to a government holiday for the Feb 12 national election and referendum vote.

Failure to submit VAT returns on time carries a monthly fine of Tk 5,000.
