The key index of the Dhaka Stock Exchange has closed above the 5,500 points, regaining ground after three weeks of fluctuations in the country’s largest capital market.

The DSEX, the benchmark index, ended the day at 5,517 points, up 74 points from the previous session. Trading remained positive throughout the day, after opening at 5,443 points, with most share prices closing higher. The last time the index crossed this level was on Aug 3.

Turnover stood at Tk 11.32 billion, compared with Tk 9.71 billion the previous day. Market capitalisation rose to Tk 7.18 trillion from Tk 7.13 trillion on Wednesday.

Out of 398 traded companies, share prices rose for 281, declined for 86, and remained unchanged for 31.

The pharmaceuticals and chemicals sector led the day’s trading with Tk 1.77 billion in turnover, followed by textiles at Tk 1.54 billion. The engineering sector ranked third with Tk 12.36 billion, while banks accounted for Tk 1.09 billion.

Analysts said the steady upward trend in recent days has helped restore investor confidence after weeks of volatility.
